### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year reveals a journey enriched with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and where am I at this point?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the major obstacles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, the thought of meeting new individuals made me so anxious that I opted to stay in my room the whole day, sidestepping any social interactions. However, as the weeks went by, I began to cultivate meaningful relationships with others who now feel like a second family to me.
What did I glean from this? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you’re uncertain, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet fellow students abound. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was getting used to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level coursework. The shift from A-levels was noticeable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. At times, I questioned my skills, especially when observing others diligently studying and feeling as though I was lagging behind.
What assisted me through this? Reminding myself that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I found a particular concept challenging, there was a good chance others were struggling as well. The most beneficial lesson I learned was to seek help—whether it was from classmates or professors. Asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness; it’s a crucial component of the learning process.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most advantageous aspects of my initial year was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the struggles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.
While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the academic term, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Final Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the worries I harbored before starting university were largely unfounded. Thanks to the right support from faculty and fellow students, I managed to overcome challenges and mature both academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered that it’s feasible to strike a balance between diligence and enjoyment, even amidst exams and deadlines.
If you’re on the verge of starting your university adventure, remember that you’re not alone. Embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity.
