**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I experienced a wave of nervousness, apprehension, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was setting out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt like a lot. Now, reflecting on the preceding academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an upcoming student reading this, you may be grappling with similar feelings. On my initial day settling into my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cowering in my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with brief exchanges with others facing the same situation.
What did I glean from this? I realized that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not quite feeling ready or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is vital. With a plethora of diverse individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Navigating the Demands and Academic Pressure
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the increased complexity of the material. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, especially when you observe peers studying and feel you’re not keeping pace. The truth is: everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most critical lesson I absorbed in my first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hold back from reaching out.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the encouragement within the Materials department has been outstanding. The instructors and tutors genuinely aspire for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us all year long, addressing our concerns and providing direction. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not reaching out sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by stepping up as a well-being representative for my cohort. This role granted me the opportunity to connect more closely with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway here? Make the most of the support offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and peers, I’ve learned that I’m never truly by myself. More significantly, I’ve figured out how to enjoy my time while also managing the unavoidable stress that comes with exams and deadlines.
