**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of growth, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my journey today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

Early on, one of the most significant obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this likely resonates with you as a top concern. On my first day in the student residence, I was so apprehensive about the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day in my room, trying to avoid socializing.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from brief conversations with individuals who shared similar experiences.

The vital lesson? Take the plunge. Even when you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be countless networking events and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, ensuring you will encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying diligently.

What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp certain concepts, chances are others are too. My best piece of advice? Seek help. Whether from classmates or professors, seeking assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

A key factor that eased my experience was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any challenges we encounter.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until much later in the year, but I wish I had realized its importance earlier. I took a step forward by volunteering as a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to form connections with faculty members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous avenues to achieve this. My greatest insight? Utilize the resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I have learned that many fears I held prior to starting university were unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to help you face challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage academic demands while enjoying the university experience.

If you’re on the brink of starting your journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that presents itself.
