### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was feeling anxious, uncertain, and apprehensive about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat introverted, diving into this new phase of my life seemed quite daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, hurdles, and amazing opportunities. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the outset was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, I confined myself to my room for hours, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as weeks unfolded, I slowly forged strong bonds with peers in my course and beyond. Today, I can state with confidence that I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial.

So, what has been my takeaway? Taking that first step is always rewarding. If you feel unprepared, don’t despair—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, just be authentic. Given the diverse student population, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Rigors

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and complexity. The leap from A-levels to university life was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and felt I was lagging behind.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that I was not alone. If I struggled with a material, it was likely that others did as well. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, pursuing help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and comprehend the hurdles we confront. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, but I regret not doing it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members and gain a greater appreciation for the supportive atmosphere at Imperial. My recommendation? Make the most of the assistance available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support!

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year has shown me that many of my initial concerns were unfounded. The backing from staff and fellow students made a significant impact. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is achievable even amid the demands of exams and deadlines.

If you’re on the verge of beginning your journey at Imperial, be aware that challenges will arise, but so will remarkable opportunities for growth. Embrace the experience, ask for help when necessary, and above all, savor the journey!
