**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with a mix of nerves, uncertainties, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresher. The prospect of entering the unfamiliar was intimidating, particularly for someone who has typically been more introverted. Now that I reflect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary hurdles I encountered was the challenge of meeting new individuals. If you are an incoming student, this may resonate as a major concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I remained in my room the whole day, too anxious to meet anyone. However, now I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The vital takeaway? Take risks. Even when you feel uncertain, there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities for interaction. Above all, remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you are sure to discover others who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Rigor

The leap from A-levels to university was quite substantial, and the academic demands escalated as the year unfolded. At times, I questioned whether I was managing well, particularly when I observed others engrossed in their studies. However, I soon recognized that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled with a topic, chances were that others were too.

The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, seeking help is one of the most essential abilities you can hone in your first year.

### Encouragement from Faculty and Well-being Support

A highly comforting aspect of my program has been the outstanding support from the teaching personnel. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and are always receptive to input and discussions about the difficulties we encounter.

Though I did not fully make use of well-being support until later in the academic year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. My experience as a year well-being representative allowed me to establish connections with faculty, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and taking those steps can significantly enhance your university journey. My key realization? Make the most of the available support—there is no such thing as too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxieties and uncertainties I experienced prior to starting university were unfounded. Thanks to the appropriate support from staff and peers, I was able to face challenges and evolve both academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered that even amid exams and deadlines, it’s attainable to appreciate the process.

If you are on the verge of starting university, embrace the adventure, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every chance to evolve. You are never navigating this journey alone.
