### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the journey that awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been quite introverted, embarking on this new phase of my life felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it has been one marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered early in my journey was the quest to make friends. If you’re considering becoming a student here, you might share this concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, the thought of connecting with new individuals was so daunting that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of social exchanges.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in similar situations.
What did I realize? Making the initial move is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to mingle. Most importantly, just be your genuine self—Imperial is filled with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to second term felt even more pronounced. In such an academically rigorous setting, self-doubt can easily creep in, especially when observing others dedicated to their studies and feeling like you’re lagging behind.
What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are facing the same hurdles. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Faculty Support
One of the most comforting facets of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desires our success and is always receptive to feedback regarding our challenges. They comprehend the obstacles we encounter and actively strive to offer support.
Though I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and such connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve discovered that many of the fears I harbored before entering university were unwarranted. Support is always accessible, be it from staff or fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone and that achieving a balance between academic demands and an enjoyable university life is indeed possible.
If you’re on the verge of embarking on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you couldn’t have predicted, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about a remarkable first year.
