**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, the prospect of diving straight into this new phase was daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles faced, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve found some of the best friends I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was some casual conversation with individuals who were in a similar situation.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, that’s perfectly okay! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you engage with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse crowd across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Workload: A Steep Learning Curve
Another major challenge was getting used to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can shake your self-esteem, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something’s confusing you, I can nearly guarantee that others are having difficulties too.
The key lesson I absorbed in my first year is the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, don’t hold back from reaching out. This is a skill that will benefit you immensely throughout your university years.
### The Significance of Support: Staff and Well-being Services
This leads me to my next point: the staff in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, providing support and understanding. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, and I wish I had utilized it earlier.
At the year’s start, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the staff on a deeper level, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are countless opportunities to build rapport with faculty, and it’s one of the smartest things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway here is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Embracing University Life
Ultimately, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced before and during university were often baseless. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, those feelings of doubt can be diminished. I’ve come to realize that I’m never on this journey alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
