**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary fears about beginning university, and I was no different. On my first day at student housing, just before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve established some of the finest friendships of my life.
The decisive moment arrived when I opted to take incremental steps, such as engaging in casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same challenges. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships, and I now feel as though I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial.
What did I gain from this experience? Firstly, taking that first leap is vital. If you aren’t ready immediately, there’s no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others all year long. Secondly, being yourself is the best approach. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the heavier workload and complexity of university-level materials was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s commonplace to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.
What aided me in persevering was the recognition that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely others are too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Establishing Relationships with Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and addressed our worries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important lesson? Make the most of the support systems available to you—it exists for a purpose, and you can never have excessive help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. With a variety of support systems in place—from faculty to fellow students—there’s always someone you can rely on. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated and that it is entirely possible to enjoy life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I am thankful for the growth, friendships, and lessons this year has presented. To anyone gearing up to embark on their own university journey, remember that although the challenges may appear daunting, the rewards are truly worthwhile.
