**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, leaping into this new chapter felt incredibly intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, trials, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may be experiencing similar trepidation. On my first day of moving into student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it took was a bit of casual conversation with others facing the same uncertainties.

So, what revelation did I have? I learned that taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even when you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be a multitude of ice-breaking activities and chances to engage with fellow students. Most crucially, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse community in the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the academic load and the complexity of the subjects. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can undermine your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying diligently and feel like you’re lagging behind. However, the truth is: everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—reach out to classmates and faculty when you need help.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and tutors genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing any concerns we might have. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources available until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster relationships with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with your professors and tutors, and establishing these relationships can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly misplaced. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, help is always at hand when you need it. I’ve come to understand that I’m never isolated, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
