**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my inaugural year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I realize it has been a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a key concern for you. I vividly remember my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet here I am today, proud to say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

What’s the crucial lesson I derived from this experience? Take that initial leap. Even if you’re anxious or uncertain, there will be ample opportunities and icebreaker events to connect with others in the same position. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re guaranteed to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic pressures and workload. The leap from A-levels to university was drastic, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel swamped when witnessing others study and to begin doubting your own competence.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you find a particular concept difficult, it’s likely others do as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or professors. Learning to ask for support early in your academic journey is one of the most valuable skills you can hone in your first year.

### The Value of Support Networks

One of the most reassuring elements of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took the step of becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the chance to connect with staff members, which proved incredibly helpful. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My principal takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before starting university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems are available, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate this transition. Above all, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that it’s feasible to balance academic demands with a fulfilling university experience.

If you’re on the brink of commencing university, my advice is straightforward: take that plunge, ask for help when necessary, and embrace the journey that awaits.
