**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, the prospect of plunging into the thick of things was intimidating. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making connections. For numerous newcomers, this aspect of beginning university can be daunting, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into accommodations, just a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the whole day isolating in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversations with others who were in similar circumstances as mine.
So, what did I take away? The essential step is to take that bold jump at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Overcoming the Academic Challenges
Another significant obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can sometimes shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s what supported me: reminding myself that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is perplexing to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The vital lesson I gleaned in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
### The Encouraging Faculty
When discussing staff, the faculty in the Materials department is outstanding. They sincerely wish for your success and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They maintain regular communication with us throughout the year, tackling any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect better with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are countless ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My biggest takeaway from this journey is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone. I’ve also figured out how to balance having a good time with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
