**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and introverted, this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life was the task of making friends. If you are an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your foremost worries as well. On my initial day in my dormitory, right before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most treasured friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has become a second home for me, largely due to a few casual conversations with peers who were in similar situations. The most significant lesson I’ve learned? Make the effort early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and occasions to meet others. Above all, be yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you are sure to find friends who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge I faced was adjusting to the workload and the heightened difficulty level of the material. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term posed even greater challenges. It’s easy to feel swamped, particularly when you observe others studying and questioning your own capabilities.
The important takeaway? Keep in mind that everyone is in the same boat. If you’re grappling with a concept, you can bet that others are as well. Don’t shy away from seeking help—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to reach out for assistance is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Finding Support
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are truly amazing. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always ready to address any issues we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in regular contact with us, ensuring we had access to the support we required.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to build rapport with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My suggestion? Take full advantage of the available support—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Final Thoughts
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and throughout my university experience was largely unwarranted. There exist numerous support systems—ranging from faculty to fellow students—that ensure no one has to feel isolated. More importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.
