**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was preparing to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Previously, I had been quite shy, and entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself currently?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I was so daunted by the concept of socializing that I spent the entire day alone in my room. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations and stepping beyond my comfort zone. My main takeaway? Take the plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is populated with a variety of individuals, and you will undoubtedly find those who align with your passions and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more dramatic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when witnessing peers working diligently.

What assisted me were the realizations that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are in the same boat. The best step you can take is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek out support is among the most important abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

Regarding support, the teaching staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and dialogue. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff, which proved to be remarkably advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My essential takeaway? Make the most of the support systems that are available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the fears and worries I held before starting university were mostly baseless. With the right support from faculty and fellow students, challenges become considerably easier to handle. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and that balancing academic challenges with a rewarding and enjoyable university experience is indeed possible.

If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, seek help, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
