**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was not a typical experience for me. However, as I reflect on the academic year now, I perceive it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and much enjoyment. So what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

### Making Connections: The First Major Hurdle

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, this may also be one of your primary concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—both within my course and throughout the university.

I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same uncertainties. What did I glean from this? It’s vital to take that first step at the start of the year. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse cohort of students, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Demands

Another challenge I encountered was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was undoubtedly significant, and an even steeper climb was evident from the first term to the second. Being immersed in this setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

One strategy that aided me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s quite likely that others are too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Never hesitate to reach out to your fellow students or the faculty when you find yourself stuck—it’s an essential skill to cultivate early.

### Support from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the lecturers and tutors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our inquiries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more closely, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and I highly endorse pursuing this. My primary takeaway from this experience is to make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced before and during university were largely unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More significantly, I uncovered how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
