**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehensions, indecision, and doubts regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gleaned, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was forming new friendships. If you’re about to start this journey, this may also be a primary worry for you. On my initial day in student housing, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, now that I look back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and it only required stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who were feeling just as I was.

What was the most significant lesson I acquired? Take that first step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there are ample icebreaker activities and social events to facilitate connections. Above all, remain authentic—Imperial is filled with a wide array of individuals, and you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the curriculum. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I found myself questioning my capabilities, especially when I observed others studying diligently and felt as though I was falling short.

What assisted me in overcoming these feelings was recognizing that everyone encounters similar difficulties. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too. The most effective course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Requesting support is not indicative of weakness; rather, it’s a vital skill that will aid you in achieving success.

### Engaging with Faculty

A crucial element of my first year was the encouragement from the Materials Science faculty. The staff members genuinely wish for students to succeed, and they comprehend the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, making certain our voices are acknowledged.

While I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later on, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Serving as a well-being representative helped me forge connections with faculty, which has proven to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to interact with lecturers and academic advisors, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have an excess of assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, this year has shown me that the trepidations and worries I harbored prior to starting university were mostly baseless. Support is consistently accessible, whether from faculty or fellow classmates. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the pressures of academics with enjoying university life.

If you’re on the cusp of beginning your path at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, relish the experience. It’s a transformative journey, and you’ll emerge from it more resilient, confident, and with lasting friendships.
