**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat timid and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I realize that this past year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating facets of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my first day in the student residence—just prior to the commencement of the term—I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and all it took were a few moments of light conversation with individuals who shared my circumstance. My key takeaway? Dare to make that first move at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is filled with a variety of individuals, and you will naturally connect with those who have similar interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another major hurdle was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. At times, it was simple to feel swamped and question my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying rigorously.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone else was experiencing similar challenges. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were too. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year. Whether you reach out to your peers or seek help from instructors, support is always within reach.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

Speaking of support, one of the standout features of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the dedication of the staff. They truly prioritize students’ welfare and academic achievement. Throughout the year, they engaged in open dialogue with us, ensuring we had access to the necessary resources.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the teaching staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, this year has shown me that the apprehensions and fears I experienced prior to starting university were largely unfounded. There are abundant support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through the transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone. In spite of the stress from exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.

If you’re on the brink of starting your adventure at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You will develop in ways you never anticipated, and before you realize it, you’ll be looking back on an extraordinary first year—much like I am now.
