**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having been relatively shy and introverted in the past, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re contemplating this path, this might resonate with you as a significant concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, right before the term started, I remained in my room for the entirety of the day, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who have become like a second family to me.
What did this journey teach me? Firstly, taking that initial plunge is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to engage with others will arise. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is key. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and seemingly mastering concepts with ease.
How did I navigate this? I reminded myself that everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re finding a subject tough, it’s likely that others are in the same situation. The best course of action is to reach out for help—whether it’s from classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most beneficial skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, one of the most comforting elements of my course has been the outstanding staff in the Materials department. They truly desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and communication. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and are always ready to lend a hand.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, yet I wish I had embraced it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Maximize your use of the support available—there’s never such a thing as too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during the university year was frequently unwarranted. There exist numerous support networks, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to balance academic pressures while relishing university life.
For anyone embarking on their journey at Imperial, my suggestion is straightforward: take the leap, don’t hesitate to seek help, and remain true to yourself. You’ll discover your niche, just as I did.
