**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was ready to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, transitioning into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, trials, and amazing experiences. So, what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standpoint?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A major challenge I encountered at university’s onset was the task of meeting new people. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, the mere thought of interacting with others left me so anxious that I spent the whole day secluded in my room. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships of my life.

I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with others in comparable situations. My key lesson? Dive in early. Even if you’re unsure, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others await you. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term proved even tougher. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by diligent peers.

What assisted me the most was the realization that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles. If I had difficulty grasping something, likely, others did as well. The best piece of advice I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or educators, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your initial year.

### The Significance of Seeking Assistance

One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the remarkable support from the teaching staff. They genuinely aspire to see their students thrive and are always receptive to input. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, addressing our queries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the support services until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I made a proactive choice by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with the staff. Building rapport with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and I strongly suggest utilizing the available assistance. You can never seek too much help!

### Insights from My First Year

In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I held before commencing university were unfounded. Numerous support networks exist, from faculty to fellow students, designed to assist you in navigating the challenges. Most significantly, I’ve gained the understanding that I’m never genuinely alone. Even amid stressful periods like exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to discover ways to relish my university experience and optimize my time here.

If you’re on the brink of starting your journey at Imperial, my simplified advice is: embrace the hurdles, reach out for support when necessary, and don’t hesitate to venture beyond your comfort zone. You’ll evolve in unexpected ways, and you may just find yourself having the most incredible year of your life.
