### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, ambiguity, and eagerness as I got ready to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Entering the unfamiliar was intimidating, particularly for someone like me who has always leaned towards being reserved. Reflecting on the year that has passed, I recognize a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the beginning was the challenge of making new acquaintances. If you’re an upcoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day living in student accommodation—I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to reach out to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve met here have grown to be like a second family. What was the key to this change? Simply initiating conversations with others who shared my feelings of uncertainty.
One crucial lesson I’ve learned is that taking even the smallest step can significantly influence your experience. Even if you’re unsure, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you will surely discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It was easy to feel daunted, particularly in comparison to peers who seemed to understand concepts more swiftly.
Nevertheless, I quickly realized that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates were facing similar struggles. The best recommendation I can give is to seek help. Whether from fellow students, tutors, or lecturers, reaching out for assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most reassuring aspects of my experience has been the remarkable support offered by the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely desires for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and actively strive to provide assistance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had seized that opportunity sooner. Early on, I took a step forward and became a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. This involvement revealed just how approachable and supportive they truly are. Whether through office hours, mentoring programs, or well-being resources, there are numerous avenues to seek help—and you should never hesitate to take advantage of them.
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial worries were unfounded. The backing from both staff and fellow students has been priceless, and I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone when facing challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.
For anyone about to embark on their journey, my advice is straightforward: take that step, seek help when required, and welcome the experience. University is a time for growth, and with the proper mindset, it can be one of the most fulfilling chapters of your life.
