**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Hesitance to Forge Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new people that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of socializing.
Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with simple conversations with those who were experiencing the same feelings as me.
So, what has this taught me? I came to understand that making the first move is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and social occasions to assist you in connecting with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial—Imperial is rich with diverse characters, and you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more taxing. There were moments when I felt swamped and questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and appearing more self-assured.
What aided me in persevering was the realization that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found a concept difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others were too. The most effective strategy I learned was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Asking for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the phenomenal support from the faculty. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any challenges we encounter.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. At the beginning, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, enabling me to build connections with faculty members. This proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant lesson? Utilize the support available—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before embarking on my university journey was mostly unwarranted. Countless support systems are in place—from educational staff to fellow students—ensuring that no one has to navigate this path in isolation. More importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic pressures while cherishing my university experience.
If you’re preparing to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace every chance that arises. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you’ll create unforgettable memories along the journey.
