**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase was quite intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and countless memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the beginning of the term, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to reach out to others. However, looking at my experience now, I am happy to report that I’ve made some of the finest friends I could ask for.
Imperial has truly become my second home, and it merely required me to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with those in similar situations. My key insight? Embrace that leap early. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be countless ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, remain authentic—Imperial is teeming with a diverse array of individuals, and you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Rigors
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university presented a significant leap, and moving from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. It’s all too easy to feel daunted, particularly when observing others engrossed in their studies, leading to self-doubt.
What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or academic staff. Learning to ask for help is among the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Seeking Help
On the topic of help, the personnel in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication and provided various types of support.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I experienced before and throughout university was often unfounded. There are many support systems established, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. Most crucially, I have learned that I am never truly alone, and it is indeed possible to relish university life even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
If you are about to commence your own journey at Imperial, fully embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step—you won’t regret it.
