**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and skepticism about what was coming. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been timid and introverted, entering this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and how do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. The thought of meeting new individuals was daunting, and if you’re an incoming student, you may share those feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire day in my room, far too anxious to go out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve met here have become a second family to me. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling just like I was.

So, what did I take away from this? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when witnessing others studying rigorously.

Nonetheless, one of the most crucial lessons I learned is that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or your instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the highlights of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department’s faculty. They genuinely care about student success and are aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had done that earlier. Taking that initiative made a significant difference. Initially, I assumed the role of a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. Establishing a rapport with your lecturers and support staff can be incredibly advantageous, and numerous opportunities exist for doing so. My key takeaway? Leverage the assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during my time at university—were unfounded. Numerous support systems are in place, from staff to fellow students, all ready to help you tackle challenges. Most importantly, I’ve grown to appreciate that I’m never alone.

This year has taught me how to harmonize academic pressures with personal fulfillment, and I’ve developed in ways I never anticipated. If you’re on the brink of starting university, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and remember that you’re not alone in this endeavor.
