**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the significant hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day of student housing, right before the semester began, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to emerge and introduce myself. Nevertheless, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life.

Imperial has truly become my second home, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with others who were equally nervous. The greatest lesson I learned? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be genuine—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’ll surely encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the intensity and complexity of the coursework. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even steeper transition from the first to the second terms. At times, it was easy to feel daunted, particularly when I found myself comparing my progress to peers. However, I quickly understood that everyone faced similar struggles. If I was having difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were too.

The most valuable piece of advice I can provide? Don’t hesitate to seek help. This is arguably the most crucial skill to foster during your first year. Whether you reach out to classmates or ask for assistance from professors, remember to voice your questions.

### Assistance from Faculty and Well-Being Programs

One aspect that truly impressed me was the fantastic support provided by the teaching staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, responding to our issues and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I held prior to starting university were unfounded. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to assist in overcoming challenges. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic demands while also savoring my university experience.

For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll look back on your first year with a sense of pride and gratitude.
