**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and second thoughts about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted made this fresh start feel quite daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year replete with personal development, trials, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the commencement of the term, I spent a whole day in my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could have hoped for—individuals who feel like family.

What did I discover? Taking that crucial first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, rest assured—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to encounter people who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. Occasionally, observing my peers study left me questioning my own abilities.

What assisted me in persevering was acknowledging that we were all experiencing similar struggles. If I was grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others were too. The crucial lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching staff. Developing the skill to reach out for help is one of the most beneficial attributes you can acquire during your first year.

### The Significance of Assistance from Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for student success and are consistently receptive to input. Throughout the academic year, they maintained regular communication with us, responding to our concerns and offering valuable advice.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my wisest choices was becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Embrace all the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I have learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and throughout the year—often proved to be unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support available from both faculty and peers, I was seldom genuinely isolated. More importantly, I discovered how to juggle academic demands while savoring my time at university.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, seek assistance when necessary, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You will grow in ways you never anticipated.
