**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been timid and introverted, entering this new phase of my life felt daunting. Looking back now, I perceive a year rich in personal development, challenges, and cherished memories. So, what lessons have I taken away, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern of yours as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the weeks passed, I slowly cultivated meaningful relationships with classmates and peers across the university. Today, I can proudly state that I have found a second family here at Imperial.
What insights did I gain from this journey? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel reluctant, there will be numerous ice-breakers and chances to meet new people. Second, the best approach is to remain true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your aspirations and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels to university was daunting, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more intense. At times, witnessing others manage their studies effectively led to self-doubt regarding my own capabilities.
What assisted me in persevering? Acknowledging that I wasn’t alone. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were in the same boat. The crucial lesson was to ask for assistance—whether from peers or professors. Learning to seek help early on was one of the most invaluable lessons of my initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
A highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about our success and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we encounter and proactively strive to assist us.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to engage with staff members. Creating these connections turned out to be extremely beneficial. My recommendation? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never receive too much help!
### Main Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced before starting university was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, ranging from staff to fellow students, to facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone. Despite the strains of exams and deadlines, I’ve learned to balance my academic commitments while also savoring university life.
For anyone preparing to begin their own university adventure: embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity. It’s a life-changing experience that will leave you stronger than you ever anticipated.
