**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been more introverted, diving into this new experience felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your foremost worries. On my very first day in university housing, I spent an entire day cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, here and now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it only required a little conversation with others in similar situations.

What did I come to realize? Taking that first step is invariably worth it. If you aren’t ready just yet, no need to stress—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’ll undoubtedly connect with those who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heavy workload and the complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel inundated or to doubt one’s own skills when observing others studying with assurance.

What propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone faces challenges at some point. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely that others do too. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching faculty. Developing the ability to ask for help is among the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and recognize the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open, ensuring we received the necessary guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of the most positive decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your experience at university. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during my university journey was often unfounded. There are numerous support structures available—from faculty to fellow students—to help you manage any hurdles you may face. Most critically, I’ve learned that I am never truly alone. In spite of the pressures posed by examinations and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my university experience.

For anyone ready to begin their adventure at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated.
