**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Daring to step into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and heaps of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I stand now?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. On my first day settling into accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking that initial plunge at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a myriad of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Coping with the Workload
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the intensive workload and challenging material. There was certainly a clear leap from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be a challenge for your self-esteem, particularly when you observe classmates studying and begin to question your own capabilities.
What sustained me through this was the awareness that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re puzzled by a concept, chances are others are equally baffled. The key lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial takeaway from my first year—always feel free to reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!
### Backing from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any queries we may have. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the term, but I wish I had done so earlier.
At the year’s start, I made a bold decision by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to establish a closer relationship with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your well-being. My recommendation? Make the most of the support that’s available—you can never have too much guidance!
### Final Reflections
To conclude, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. Countless support systems exist, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying university life while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
