**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles overcome, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what exactly have I taken away from this experience, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early in my journey was the process of making friends. For any prospective student reading this, you may share similar concerns. I certainly did. On my initial day moving into student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with simple conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same transition.
So, what did I discover? I found that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s completely fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, with an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can undermine your self-confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging. However, here’s the reality: everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The most crucial lesson I learned during my first year was to seek assistance. Don’t hesitate to approach your classmates or the faculty when you find yourself in a tough spot.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff are genuinely invested in your success, and they comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year and are always available to address any concerns we might have. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to establish a closer relationship with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt leading up to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the broad array of support systems available—from faculty to fellow students—there is always someone to rely on. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying life with handling the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
