**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, taking the plunge into such a new and daunting experience was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I can appreciate just how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of trepidation. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the entire day ensconced in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. My friends here have evolved into a second family, and it all started with brief chats with people who were equally anxious. What has this taught me? Taking that initial leap of faith is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others.
Most significantly, I learned the importance of being authentic. With such a varied community of students at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values. So, don’t shy away from stepping forward—you’ll be amazed at how quickly friendships blossom.
### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material posed another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more drastic. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when observing others studying and worrying that you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating these emotions was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The vital lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is perhaps the most crucial takeaway from my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for support.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely want students to succeed and show understanding for the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and proactively addressed student concerns.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which became invaluable.
There are numerous ways to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I felt prior to and during university were unwarranted. With the myriad support options available—from staff to fellow students—there’s always someone willing to help. This year has imparted the lesson that I’m never truly alone and that balancing the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment is entirely feasible.
Beginning university may appear overwhelming, but it also presents a remarkable opportunity for personal growth. By taking modest leaps of courage—whether it’s introducing yourself to new people, seeking assistance, or stepping outside your comfort zone—you’ll discover your place and flourish.
