**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who once was shy and introverted, plunging into such a new environment seemed frightfully intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, hurdles, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what precisely has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself now?
### Encountering the Initial Major Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I faced was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably something you’re concerned about too. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel akin to a second family during my time at Imperial.
So, what have I taken away from this? The crucial step is to make that first move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in similar situations are available. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student body across the course and university, you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Obstacles
Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. This transition can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when observing others study and feeling as though you’re falling short.
However, what assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing challenges too. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Don’t hesitate to ask for support when you need it.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
This leads me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication regarding any challenges we faced. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not taking advantage of it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff more personally, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the broad array of support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I am never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while juggling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
