**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first-year studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, venturing into the unfamiliar was an intimidating challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year that brought growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but think about what I’ve experienced and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a significant concern, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds, built through shared experiences and mutual encouragement, have become a second family for me. All it took was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in brief conversations with individuals who were just as new to the experience as I was.
So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. If you aren’t ready or don’t feel comfortable immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I found that being authentic is essential. With the diversity of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What assisted me in managing these feelings of self-doubt was the understanding that everyone else was experiencing similar challenges. If I didn’t grasp something, it was likely that others were facing the same struggle. The most valuable insight I gained during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or teaching staff, reaching out can make a significant difference.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in the success of their students and empathize with the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open communication throughout the year and are always receptive to our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My main takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support options offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the pressure from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness, and I’ve grown tremendously as an individual.
To those getting ready for their first year: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that help is always accessible.
