**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who previously tended to be shy and reserved, the thought of immersing myself in this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences, I can clearly see how pivotal this journey has been. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Navigating the Friendship Challenge

One of the most daunting components of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I am proud to say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life—friends who have become like a second family.

What shifted? I decided to take a leap of faith. It commenced with casual conversations with others who were equally new and anxious. I realized that making that first move, even when it feels awkward, is invaluable. And if you’re not yet ready to engage, that’s perfectly fine! Institutions like Imperial provide ample icebreaker events and ways to connect. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a vibrant community, you’re bound to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting Academic Adjustments

Another important challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the initial term to the second felt particularly tough. It’s natural to feel inundated or doubt your skills when witnessing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What supported me during these times was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. Everyone is navigating their own challenges, and if you’re finding a concept difficult, it’s likely others are too. The best advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or staff. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been remarkable. They truly wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had exploited it earlier. Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to engage with staff members on a deeper level. Cultivating these connections has been essential, and there are numerous ways to achieve this, whether through academic roles or simply reaching out for support. My main takeaway? Leverage the resources and assistance available—you can never receive too much support!

### Insights Gained

This year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support options—from staff to fellow students—I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and self-care.

Looking back, I recognize how much progress I’ve made since that apprehensive fresher who retreated to their room on the first day. University has been a journey of growth, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
