**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and self-doubt as I geared up to start my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Plunging into the unknown was not something my introverted nature was accustomed to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with transformation—marked by personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating trials I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might share the same concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life here at Imperial.

What shifted? It all initiated with casual conversations. I discovered that everyone else was similarly situated, feeling just as apprehensive. By taking that initial step and reaching out to others, I uncovered a second family within my peers. My recommendation? Jump in early, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re guaranteed to connect with those who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others appearing to flourish.

What assisted me was recognizing that I wasn’t in this alone. If I struggled with something, it was likely that others were facing the same issues too. The crucial takeaway here? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for support is one of the vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Talking about support, the faculty in the Materials department have been nothing short of amazing. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the outset, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. It granted me the opportunity to forge relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and I highly advise embracing these opportunities. My primary lesson? Never hold back from utilizing the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much backing.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance stress from examinations and deadlines with periods of joy and fun.

Thus, to anyone preparing to embark on their own university journey: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll evolve in ways you never imagined, and you may very well have the time of your life along the way.
