**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had previously been introverted and shy, diving into the unknown was not something I was used to. Now, as I look back, I reflect on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a plethora of enjoyable experiences. But what exactly have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may share similar concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, mere days before the term commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Speed to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, initiating with casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what did I discover? I came to understand that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events and avenues to meet new people will arise. Most importantly, I recognized that authenticity is essential. Among the diverse individuals in the course and university, you are sure to connect with those who share your vibe.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands
Another challenge I had to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Existing in such a demanding academic atmosphere can sometimes unsettle your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and question your own abilities.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the comprehension that everyone is dealing with similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, the likelihood is others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might have been the single most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year: reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
### Guidance from the Staff: Don’t Hesitate to Connect
On the topic of staff, the backing from the Materials department is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors truly wish for your success and are aware of the hurdles students confront. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which has proven to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous methods to establish rapport with the faculty, and it is one of the most productive steps you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this university experience is to capitalize on the support that is accessible to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Surmounting Anxiety and Embracing University Life
To summarize, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the abundance of support provided by both faculty and peers, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to find harmony between having fun and managing the unavoidable stress associated with exams and deadlines.
By welcoming the challenges and opportunities presented by university life, I’ve evolved in unforeseen ways. If you are about to embark on your own adventure, remember: take that leap, seek help, and most importantly, be true to yourself.
