**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself brimming with anxiety, fear, and apprehension about what the future would hold. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into this fresh chapter felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and, above all, immense enjoyment. But what have I truly learned, and what is my current standing?
### Surmounting the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, a few days ahead of the official start of the term, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all initiated by a handful of uncomplicated conversations with others who were in a similar situation.
So, what insights have I gained? I understood that taking that first brave step is essential. If you’re not quite ready or don’t feel at ease initially, that’s perfectly alright! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others exist. Above all, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse range of personalities throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who vibe with you.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was a clear elevation from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. It’s common to feel overcome or to doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently grasping concepts quicker than you. But here’s the reality: everyone faces similar situations. If something confounds you, there’s a good chance others are wrestling with it too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance. This may be the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year—reach out to your classmates and the staff whenever you require help!
### Fostering Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for your success and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained continuous communication with us, addressing our issues and providing help. I didn’t fully exploit the support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with your professors and lecturers, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during my time at university was mostly unwarranted. There are a multitude of support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in facing challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying university life and managing the demands of exams and deadlines.
