**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, the idea of stepping into the unfamiliar was daunting. Now that I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you are a future student perusing this, you might share the same concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—before classes had even commenced—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with peers who were navigating the same experience.

What lesson did I extract from this? I learned that taking the first step is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be abundant ice-breaking events and chances to meet new individuals. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse array of personalities across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty level of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this new academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling like you’re falling behind.

What assisted me through this period was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having trouble understanding something, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The crucial takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. This was perhaps the most vital lesson I learned throughout my first year—whether it’s from peers or faculty, reaching out for help is indispensable.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and are fully aware of the difficulties faced by students. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, providing support and addressing our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I now wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position facilitated a deeper connection with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the teaching staff, and it can be one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, those anxious feelings can be managed effectively. I’ve realized that I am never alone in confronting challenges, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
