**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and immense enjoyment, I see just how life-changing this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making friends. For many incoming students, this is a major concern about starting university, and I was no outlier. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can enthusiastically say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.
These bonds didn’t materialize overnight; they began with incremental steps—casual chats with others who were just as anxious as I was. Gradually, these links evolved into what feels like a second family. My most important lesson? Take that leap early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Tackling the Academic Demands
Adjusting to the academic responsibilities and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another substantial challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even steeper. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-performing peers.
What aided me tremendously was recognizing that I wasn’t solitary in this. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I found something unclear, it was likely that others were struggling too. The essential takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or instructors, reaching out can be transformative.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely want students to thrive and are consistently understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position not only allowed me to contribute to the student community but also gave me the opportunity to forge connections with staff—a truly beneficial experience. My suggestion? Leverage the support systems provided. Whether it’s pastoral care, academic assistance, or simply familiarizing yourself with your lecturers, these resources exist to help you succeed.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the extensive support accessible from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has instructed me on how to balance exam and deadline stress with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and connection. For anyone preparing to begin their own university experience, remember: take the plunge, ask for help, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.
