**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve progressed.
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a primary worry for you as well. On my first day in the student residence, just before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
These connections didn’t materialize instantly, but they began with small actions—like engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and apprehensive like me. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into a second family here at Imperial. My key insight? Make those early connections. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be yourself. With such a rich diversity at university, you’re sure to find people who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your abilities when witnessing peers studying and seeming to succeed effortlessly.
What aided me in maneuvering this was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, it’s likely others are too. The essential action is seeking assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to reach out for support is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us, addressing our queries and offering advice.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was an early leap I made, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became priceless. Whether through formal duties or informal chats, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best advantages you can create for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much!
### Insights Gained
This year has instilled in me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to handle stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I take pride in the strides I’ve made and feel thankful for the challenges that nudged me out of my comfort zone. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Take the plunge, request assistance, and seize the opportunities that come your way—you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
