**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the challenges ahead. I was set to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was far from where I felt comfortable. Reflecting now, I perceive an academic year that has been pivotal—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge
A particularly daunting part of starting university was the process of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern of yours as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation—just a few days ahead of the term officially kicking off—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I encouraged myself to engage in small conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with that crucial first step.
So, what’s the lesson? Stepping outside your comfort zone early can be incredibly beneficial. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just remain authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the intricacy of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your skills, particularly when observing others managing with apparent ease.
What aided me was understanding that everyone else is navigating similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely others do too. The crucial thing is seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This may be the most vital ability to cultivate in your initial year.
### Support from the Materials Department
Regarding faculty, the Materials Department at Imperial is outstanding. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering support.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support options until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. One initiative I embarked upon early was becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly suggest embracing these chances. My main takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the resources and support structures available to you—you can never obtain too much assistance.
### Key Takeaways
This year has illuminated that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive network of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and excitement.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve transformed since that anxious freshman concealed in their room. University has been a voyage of self-exploration, and I eagerly anticipate what the coming years will hold.
