**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I embarked on a journey that was both exhilarating and daunting: pursuing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Being someone who had always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt like venturing into the unfamiliar. Now, as I reflect on an academic year abundant with personal development, challenges, and a good deal of enjoyment, I can assert it’s been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Navigating the Friendship Challenge

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re considering university, this might also be a concern for you. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, looking back, I’m lucky to have cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who truly feel like a second family.

What shifted? It all initiated with small actions, like engaging in light conversation with others in similar circumstances. I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re feeling unprepared or awkward, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaking activities and chances to bond with others. Most crucially, I found that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter those who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.

What aided me in managing these emotions was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential action is to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I garnered during my first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or faculty, asking for help can create significant change.

### Assistance from Staff and Pastoral Support

Speaking of assistance, the personnel within the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our needs and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the outset of the year. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Make the most of the resources available to you—you can never have too much support.

### Reflections and Realizations

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive range of support available from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. This year has enlightened me on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I contemplate the future, I feel thankful for the growth I’ve achieved and the relationships I’ve established. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure, remember that feeling nervous is normal—but also recognize that you’re entering a space where support, camaraderie, and opportunities for development are always nearby.
