**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was imbued with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of starting my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Yet now, as I reflect on a year filled with development, challenges, and a fair amount of enjoyment, I realize just how transformative this experience has been. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating aspects I encountered at the university’s outset was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you may relate to the trepidation involved in meeting new individuals. On my first day in the student residence, mere days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have become like a second family to me at Imperial. What changed? It all commenced with light conversations and finding common ground with those sharing similar experiences.

The most significant lesson I absorbed is that taking risks at the academic year’s start is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a wide-ranging group of students throughout the course and the university, you are certain to discover individuals who resonate with your values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term was marked by even greater intensity. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your skills, especially when observing peers who seem to be managing well and questioning your own effort levels.

What aided me during those times was the realization that everyone is grappling with similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from fellow classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Encouraging Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial stands out as exceptional. The professors and instructors genuinely care about student success and demonstrate understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They keep communication channels open throughout the year and are always ready to respond to our questions.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the final stages of the year, and I wish I had begun sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty, which proved immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, building rapport with faculty is one of the best things you can do for your personal growth.

My main takeaway in this regard is to take advantage of the support systems available to you. Be it academic assistance, pastoral care, or merely guidance, there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has imparted the understanding that the anxiety I experienced, both prior to entering university and during my journey here, was frequently unwarranted. A plethora of resources and individuals are eager to assist, ranging from staff to fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how much I’ve matured—not only academically but also as an individual. The obstacles I’ve faced have forged me into a more self-assured and tenacious person, and I eagerly anticipate what the next phase of my university experience will bring.
