**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was the task of forging new friendships. If you are a future student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, a few days before the academic term officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too nervous to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, I can proudly claim to have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.
These relationships didn’t develop overnight; they began with small interactions—casual talks with peers who were experiencing the same feelings. Gradually, these bonds evolved into a second family at Imperial. My most important lesson? Take that initial leap of faith. Even if you are feeling apprehensive or uncertain, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Workload
Another major challenge was acclimating to the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was distinct, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What aided me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that your peers are experiencing the same. The crucial thing is to reach out for help—whether from fellow students or from teaching personnel. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most important skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want to see students thrive and are well aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were always willing to address our concerns.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of the proactive steps I took at the year’s onset was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are various means to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Lessons Acquired
Reflecting on the year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even during the year—was frequently unwarranted. There are numerous resources and support structures available, from both staff and fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoying myself with managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I am thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve forged. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the hurdles, seek help, and remember to enjoy the journey.
