**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the year now, I perceive it as a transformative experience—rich in personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s onset was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share the same apprehension—it’s a prevalent concern. On my first day in student accommodation, shortly before the term began, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment transpired when I resolved to take a small leap of faith and initiate conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. Gradually, these interactions flourished into friendships that resemble a second family. My primary lesson? Don’t hesitate to take that first step. Even if you’re not prepared right off the bat, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-level studies to university was striking, and the progression from the first term to the second term felt even more arduous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others around you seemingly thriving.
What aided me during these trying times was the recognition that everyone grapples with similar issues. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp certain concepts, it’s likely that others are facing the same struggles. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. Developing the habit of asking for help is undoubtedly one of the most beneficial skills you can acquire during your initial year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to prosper and display understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
I did not fully exploit the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative early on was a significant leap for me, but it turned out to be one of the most positive choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which has been invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors can have a substantial impact. My suggestion? Fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the apprehension I experienced—both beforehand and throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has imparted the lesson of balancing stressors such as exams and deadlines with periods of joy and personal growth.
To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always obtainable.
