**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of nervous excitement, uncertainty, and insecurity as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, stepping into uncharted territory felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and memorable moments, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve evolved and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Establishing Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of forging friendships. This might resonate with you if you’re an incoming student. I recall my first day in student housing, where I remained in my room, paralyzed by nerves and unable to introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can confidently affirm that I have made some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My peers at Imperial have come to feel like my second family.
How did I manage this? By taking that first courageous step. Even if you’re hesitant to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. The secret is simply being yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university presented another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities in the company of high-achieving classmates.
What helped me during those uncertain times was recognizing that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I found something confusing, it was likely others did as well. The key lesson I absorbed was to seek assistance—whether from peers or academic staff. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey.
### The Exceptional Staff Support
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The educators and support personnel are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They promote open dialogue and are always willing to listen to our concerns.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it became one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual chats, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. Leverage the support and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Main Insights
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my time at university was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments filled with joy and laughter.
As I reflect back, I perceive a year filled with personal development, new friendships, and invaluable insights. If there’s one piece of advice I would share with anyone embarking on their university journey, it would be this: take that leap, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be astonished by what you can accomplish.
