**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was daunting. Now that I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyable experiences, I can recognize the significant amount I’ve learned and how much I’ve developed.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you may have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, right before the semester began, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have turned into my second family here at Imperial, all initiated through small chats with others who were just as anxious as I was.
What did I take away from this? It’s essential to take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied community of students, you will surely find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university represented another major challenge. The leap from A-level studies to university coursework was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you see others appearing to thrive.
What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are in the same situation. The vital lesson I learned in my first year is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This is arguably the most crucial insight from this year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
The instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire to see students succeed and are understanding of the struggles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication with us, responding to our concerns and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to engage with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to forge connections with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My recommendation? Fully leverage the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even during my time here—was often misplaced. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to juggle the pressures of examinations and deadlines while still finding time to enjoy myself, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.
If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Embrace the challenges, take those courageous steps, and remember that support is always close by.
