**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat reserved and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt extremely daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Apprehension of Making Connections

One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was the challenge of forming friendships. For countless incoming students, this stands out as a major concern when commencing university, and I was no different. On my first day at the student residence, I found myself spending hours cocooned in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment arrived when I opted to take a risk and engage in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. That first step of faith opened the door to bonds that now feel like a second family. If I’ve gleaned anything from this experience, it’s that pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone early on pays off tremendously. Even if you don’t feel equipped to do so right away, there’s no need for concern—numerous icebreaking events and opportunities to connect abound. Most significantly, just remain true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university proved to be another substantial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers who appear to have everything under control.

What assisted me in managing this transition was the realization that I was not alone in my struggles. Everyone faces difficulties at some point, and if there’s something you’re puzzled about, it’s likely that others are experiencing that as well. The vital takeaway for me was to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or teaching staff. This stands out as perhaps the most crucial lesson from my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Encouraging Staff and Support Services

On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open channels of communication and were always eager to address our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care options available until late in the year, I regret not engaging sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative turned out to be one of the wisest choices I could have made. It provided me with the opportunity to foster connections with staff members, which was invaluable. There are numerous ways to establish relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My counsel? Leverage the resources and support systems accessible to you—you can never have excess support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to recognize that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. Thanks to the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still allowing for moments of happiness and enjoyment.

If there’s a single takeaway I’d like to impart, it’s this: don’t shy away from taking that leap of faith. Whether it involves introducing yourself to new individuals, seeking assistance, or stepping into a leadership position, these small acts of bravery can lead to tremendous development and unforgettable memories.
