**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the road ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a major life transition was daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day settling into accommodation, I spent hours secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The friends I’ve made here have become my chosen family, both within my programme and throughout the university.

What assisted me in reaching this point? Taking that bold first step. Even if you aren’t ready to jump in immediately, there’s no need to fret—there are numerous social events and activities specifically crafted to help you meet people. I also learned the significance of being genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Facing Academic Difficulties
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another crucial challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me was the reminder that I was not in this alone—everyone was navigating the same obstacles. If I struggled with a concept, chances are that others were finding it challenging as well. The important lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for help is essential during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is nothing short of outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication channels open and are always willing to listen to our concerns.

I didn’t fully utilize the emotional support offered until late in the year, but looking back, I wish I had reached out earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, establishing relationships with staff is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Pondering my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was frequently unwarranted. With the plethora of support available from faculty and fellow students, I was rarely truly alone. This year has taught me the art of balancing exam-related stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and connection.

To anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure: embrace the difficulties, take those brave steps, and remember that assistance is always accessible. The experience is as rewarding as you choose to make it, and you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
