**Thoughts on My Initial Year Exploring Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved person, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the primary challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I felt so intimidated that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has become like a second family to me, and it only required stepping beyond my comfort limits and engaging in small talks with others in similar positions.

So, what did I take away? That first step at the year’s start is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker gatherings and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the escalated difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition between the first and second terms was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated, especially when observing others studying and questioning your own capabilities.

What aided me was recognizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best action you can take is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is among the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A highlight of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They sincerely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept us communicated, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Making that move proved to be incredibly impactful. At the beginning of the year, I assumed the role of a well-being representative, facilitating connections with staff members—an experience I found invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my year, I have learned that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems, from faculty to fellow students, exist to ease the transition. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I am never alone. Despite the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve also discovered how to savor my time at university.

For anyone on the brink of beginning their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: tackle the challenges head-on, seek assistance when necessary, and be courageous in putting yourself forward. You may be astonished by the personal growth you experience along the way.
