**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the cusp of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize the year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and countless moments of joy. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent countless hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as time progressed, I discovered myself building meaningful friendships with peers in my course and throughout the university. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I have ever known—individuals who truly feel like a second family.
So, what insights have I gained? First and foremost, taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and social occasions to facilitate connections with others. Secondly, the most advantageous approach is to remain authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Adapting to the demands of coursework and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more rigorous. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your competence, especially when you observe others studying and presume they have everything sorted out.
What aided me through this experience was the recognition that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
In terms of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about student success and are always ready to assist. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing support.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until later in the academic year, I wish I had sought them out earlier. One of my best decisions was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the fears and worries I harbored prior to starting university were largely unfounded. With the proper support from staff and fellow students, I was able to navigate the challenges and maximize my experience. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance academic demands with enjoyment and fulfillment.
If you’re on the verge of starting university, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and welcome every chance that presents itself. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an amazing first year.
