**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and questions about what the future held. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown was not exactly what my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day at student residence—just days before classes officially kicked off—I was so overwhelmed that I spent an entire day confined to my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has transformed into my second family, and all it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what insights did I gain? First, that first step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new faces. Second, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable hurdle was adjusting to the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your own capabilities when you observe peers studying and seemingly mastering concepts effortlessly.
Nevertheless, one of the key lessons I learned was that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The solution lies in seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s an essential ability that will contribute to your success.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the outstanding support provided by the faculty. They truly want students to excel and recognize the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and offering assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. At the start, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with lecturers and tutors, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Reflections
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the worries and anxieties I experienced before and during university were frequently unwarranted. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to help address any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never alone, and that enjoying university life is entirely possible even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
